HappyScribe is a subscription-first transcription and subtitling suite that supports more than 150 languages. It has a well-liked synced editor and a small free tier for occasional use, but its cheapest paid plan starts at €17 a month with a monthly credit allowance rather than pay-as-you-go pricing.

Sonix is a US transcription tool known for its synced text-and-audio editor and broad integrations, including a direct NVivo export. It stores customer data on AWS in the United States, which matters if your organization requires EU data residency. Its published pricing has varied across its own pages, so confirm the current rate before buying.

Amberscript is a Netherlands-based transcription and subtitling tool with EU hosting and ISO certification. It is the only tool in this comparison with an optional human-made transcription tier, from about €1.85 a minute. Its machine-transcription credits, whether subscription or pay-as-you-go, must be used within a limited window.

MAXQDA is qualitative analysis software, not a transcription tool. Its transcription add-on runs on a separate engine (Speechmatics) and is billed in prepaid hour blocks. You do not need a MAXQDA license to use it, but it is built to feed directly into MAXQDA's own coding workflow, so it mainly makes sense if you are already a MAXQDA user.
